Pace...where's it all going?

What has Brant Richards done to you Dr S ?

I don't own an On One or a Ragley and don't really have a desire to either but this guy (Richards) not only made steel hardtails trendy again and also affordable to the masses

And last but not least he invented a whole new market for long travel hardtails that can be used as AM/XC touring , commuting , sus / rigid , flat bar / drop bar . And lets not forget this is one model (In Bred) .

Not the On One/ Richards debate again
OK, you asked...

Its the hype I can't stand. Back when he was Zak Tempest in MBUK everyone was so gushing- he's great, he's so cool, but why?? what did he do that was cool(apart from ride a Yo Eddy with a dubious build)?

Then the On One days, oh he's great, the bikes are cool! Why??

I'll tell you why. Just because you had a load of keyboard warriors who wanted to build a cheep winter hack to save their over the top full sussers getting trashed in the grit and mud they went out and bought a cheap nasty hardtail frame and hey presto! Wow! Hardtails are great, hardtails are cool. Problem is that they were just rubbish frames, rubbish tubing welded in a sweat shop in the far east. Why are they great? because they are cheap?? Do people say Protons and Ladas were great because they were cheap? Supermarket own brand beans are great because they are cheap??
99% of these guys had never riden a good quality hardtail so had nothing to guage them against. Its like going from public transport to a battered old £200 Corsa and claiming its fantastic- of course it is, because thats all they know.
If he made top quality products then I could understand the hype but its just all bollocks. I don't think he invented anything or is an innovator at all. As for inventing the long forked hardtail????? :? Hes just a ex-journo/business man who has contributed nothing at all. Do we aplaud Apollo or Halfords for making affordable bikes?? Why does On One get plaudits? Because it's slick marketing and hype thats why, backed up my the army of arselickers he has on Singletrackworld.

I have nothing at all against him, I'm sure he is a top bloke and I admire how he has made a good living selling tosh, but to constantly see him hailed as a god over the last 20 years has become tiresome to say the least. If he started handbuilding fantastic frames here in the UK using the best materials and craftsmanship then I would reconsider....

Can we get back on topic now?

Remember when Pace created the RC100 it was a partnership, now it’s one man. Clearly Adrian's trying to stay with the trend, rather than set it :(

Also they're new bikes are a steaming pile of shite (yes I've tried them) and ugly as fook.

Always nice to see people voicing their option :)

So the general feeling is Pace are doing the right thing?

Everybody is happy with what was a British firm building bikes in-house using local people moving into the Taiwan built "niche" market products, with whatever the current trend is?

I to a degree agree, but the issue is there is no stock to back up the interest, the 26" version was on show at last years London bike show and still there is no stock in the country as will the Fixie frame, how long will it be before the 29" version is in anybody's hands?

Dare is say it, a least "On-One" have the stock or a confirmed delivery date when they promote something and they sell it at a realistic price rather than still carrying the name and inflated price tag

Don't get me wrong 853 frames are very nice, I have had a Niner SIR for over 3 years and love it, but they have been doing these for over 4 years, do you not feel the "boat has pulled out of the harbour"

Thoughts...

I dont think they have the choice .

I have been waiting 8 months for a custom built frame and I still havent got the drawings . I would not wait that long for a taiwan bike for sure .

Is there enough knowledge in the uk to produce bikes ?

I dont think its missed the boat more just late to the party. At least they are offering an alternative to the mainstream US builders and the more niche US brands which come at a premium.

More power to the elbow for Pace, Orange, Cotic, Singular, On One etc etc keep up the good work. Surely this proliferation of UK based manufacturers offering steel, ti and soon carbon frames is a sign that there are plenty of people out there that feel the same

I for one am happy to support any UK business whether manufactured in the UK or outsourced. The main thing for me is if I can buy a quality product with a UK link of some form I will do.

Two things for me:

01 • I thought Ragley made handbags. Or at least that's what GirlBurning is always after pestering me to buy her.

02 • Admittedly I only scan read, but where does it mention they'll be made in the UK? The three oh blah blah isn't. Can Adrian braze? Or are we talking 'assembled' in UK - they seem to be suggesting the offering of complete bikes not frames...?

That's all. Please keep arguing again.

If the general trend is to start work with steel again why are we not using English craftsmen?

From that list only Orange make anything in-house, why can't we have a brand that is prepared to use a British builder other than the fact it's down to price

Surely there is a market who would pay a little more knowing the frames were UK built, also means designs can be tweaked in-house rather than waiting 3 weeks to find the designs don't work

Look at the American market, how many "niche" builders are there, compaired to the 3 or 4 in the UK

Point 1 - Ragley handbags are grossly overpriced tat and unfortunalty one of Mrs Fs vices

Point 2 -Quote - "It will be available as a complete bike or as framekit.”

BoyBurning must try harder to improve his scan reading, otherwise good progress made this year

Whether is UK or imported I couldnt say but to be fair my Singular is UK designed and made off shore and its very nicely put together.

Yes maybe.

Ferrit needs to read forum posts properly...

I asked where it was stated the frames are made in UK...

Its a fair point Gil but hand made in the UK or the US is big bucks and doesnt sell in volume. Things have to be built to a price point to sell in numbers.

Yes Pace are trading a little on the kudos of their name and charging accordingly but at least their steel frames are fillet brazed which is a little out of the ordinary for modern steel offerings.

That said whats the price of a Niner SIR9 frame its in the region of 850 sheets and the Pace RC104 is 550 ish so even if you said £700 for the 29er its cheaper
