P/X'ing a car and the cat may have just gone on it...

I went to look at a new car yesterday and the dealership looked over my car, we agreed on a price and I paid a deposit on the new car. Due to the bank holiday we can't have the car for a couple of days until it's been taxed etc.

I've just been out in the car we are part-exchanging and I think the cat has just gone on it (mis-firing, bit of a smell to the exhaust). It's a Renault Scenic and they're notorious for the coil packs going (we've replaced a few in the past). However, with the bit of a smell to the exhaust (which we didn't get with the coil packs), so I believe the cat may have gone.

I may be able to collect the new car tomorrow/wednesday, what do you think I should do about the possible cat issue? I should still be able to drive the car through to the garage, so do I just mention that it's got a bit of a misfire?

Don't want to be dishonest with the dealership, but at the same time don't want to potentially shell out for a new cat. Any advice?

They'll only send to auction anyway.

I would be honest but in your favour

Inform the dealer you may have to pull out of the new car deal as the cat has just gone on the renault and you don't want to lose your px valuation..then the ball is firmly in his court

Realistically he can get it replaced for a couple of hundred quid so he may try and knock that if the px offer... Even then I would ask for them to go halves on it .. Again being honest

They are unlikely to throw away a new car sale over a couple of hundred quid

It did cross my mind. Just concerned my conscience might plague me for not mentioning something :?

It could be another coil pack to be fair, which would only be £25. I'm no car mechanic.

if they are a dealer "sold as seen" doesn't apply to them. as they are in the trade then you dont need to sell the car with any kind of warranty. you are not a dealer, they are.

chances are your car will be passed onto another dealer or through an auction.

dont say anything.

What age is your px?
If its over 5 yrs or 60k miles i doubt it will sit on a forecourt,
It will more than likely go straight to the auction.

Its then the bidding publics chances, if it makes less than you
Got as a px value, its the dealers loss.
Their profits will cover any losses on your car, the salesman
wont hear about it again unless your car is going to be retailed
