Thinking I might try & get my hands on a 19" C16-R but, also quite fancy a P7  Was wondering what the differences were between the two frame... weight, tubeset, geom' etc

So, any of you guys care to enlighten me?

And if anyone can point me in the direction on a mint 19" C16-R that'd be grand ;)

Cheers for any help.

Not sure myself, sorry, but queries about differences in Orange frames comes up alot and there are many threads on the subject. Each frame of any particular model even of the same year can vary slightly.

There are some real experts on Orange here and maybe a thread in FAQ's would be a good idea.

Good luck ;) Try the search function, as I say, there are many threads.

In the good old days a Clockwork had Tange Infinity and a Prestige was, err... ... Prestige.

With the advent of the P7 Orange specced their own tube sets. The Prestige was Series 8.0 (roughly Prestige spec but bigger diameter with the thinner wall thickness and a different butting profile) and Series 7.0 (Infinity spec).

Obviously this is like saying a Mondeo is like a Cortina in that it occupies the same place in the range.

The Prestige was allowed to slip quietly to one side and the range became a 2 bike range of C16R (Clockwork Mk16 R(acing?)) and P7 (Prestige Mk7).

In 1998 the Clockwork (Mk17) was re born as the C-16 designation confused customers (were they 16" only etc.). Wonder why! ;)

There is no shame in either frame, to be honest the differences are a few grammes in weight and very little on the trail between the P7 and a Clockwork (or a C-16) and it would take one hell of a rider to see the difference in lap times.

I have heard a roumer from more than one source that by 1998 the Clockwork and the P7 were the same tube set with different stickers. But this is not borne out by the fact that the P7 1998 has little + shaped bosses for the bottle cages and the Clockwork does not. Unless you know different.

Cheers. :D

I think you have to get away from the light = good thinking on this one. Like an Inbred has never been light, and a Soul is maybe 3/4 of a lb lighter than an Inbred, but that doesn't mean it's 'better', they're just made for different purposes. You wouldn't race an Inbred, but it might survive more punishment than a Soul would.

BITD the C-16R frame cost £299 and the P7 £399, so neither of them was cheap, but although the weights vary from one year to the next, the P7 was always more in the Inbred mould (and still is) and the C-16R was, I believe, always lighter, albeit perhaps not by as much as 3/4 of a lb.

I was always told a P7 was a bit stronger, a tougher tubeset than a c16r...

Plus the P7 came in Nickel finish which looks amazing (so I have 3)...

Good info guys :) Any noticable 'ride feel' between them? does the C16-R have more of a whip to it? (that classic steel thing going on?)

FORKS!! I forgot to ask. Need to be steel rigid of course.. ;)

Just got back from a ride and my pal was out on 'his' (it's actually mine) 1995 C16-R as a matter of choice, rather than his full-suss bike. He usually uses it for commuting, but he still finds it more fun sometimes than the heavier fs bike for a blast in the countryside. He remarked on how springy it felt. It has the superb F7 rigid forks, which are the best rigid forks I've ever tried. It's just a great fun bike to ride.

This isn't it, but it looks like this, except it has silver decals and silver forks like the ones below.

I'd like a 19" version of this

His & hers matching bikes. Cheesey & naff

According to the Orange blurb the C16R was a clockwork with 16 revisions hence the name.

Chris.

The c16r/clockwork is a tad heavier the the p7 and one uses one grade of tube while the other uses another :?
I think the early sus frames allowed max 120 for a p7 and 80 for the c16r
and they cost only £100 between the frame(+fork) costs
In short...Not a lot

Its weird that people will pay more for a clockwork frame than the C16R model even though the c16r name is in one year only

I must get another Clockwork  a 19" [i had the 21" cos im 6'3",but i think from riding the 19" torus that ,that is a better size for my style.

I got given their alloy fork and although i'd have preferred the steel one with the nice crown ,the alloy one was stiff as hell and i have no complaints about it
Overall i found the clock/c16r/c21r :? to be a very strong comfortable bike you can go anywhere on ,4' drops were no big deal, stairs ,escalators no problem either( on a Z2 )
The frame will handle a disc without anything more than a clamp-on adapter
Pannier eyelets too :D
