Orange Clockwork frame differences

Re:

This one is 1 1/8th and is a 1997 apparently so there was clearly a bit of mix and match going on if they were still doing 1 inch steerers a year later.

The colour is nice but needs redone. It's a 20 footer really as dings everywhere once you get up close

'97 frame number but '98 season or it would be a C16R? Colour looks like the Dormant Red used for the '98 P7

Re:

So factory colour established...
Did all Clockworks from all years have the gap in the rear of the seat tube? I just took the collar off this and it's on the front with a shim inside which has seen better days

It also has this boss low down on the seat tube I've not seen before. Any ideas?

Seat clamp, are you sat on the toilet and have plenty of time... if not get there and open this page. I'll let you work that one out

It's an e-type front mech mount.

It's a convoluted method the frame didn't need, delay in poating as I was trying to find a nice picture showing it but I couldn't quickly

Anyway, the mech 'bolt on' to the bottom bracket in place of a spacer, and then that is used to stop it rotating under use.
I can see for some setups (suspension) it may be useful, but for a traditional diamond frame, pointless. (bar fat bikes and super wide bottom bracket when the tube is to far away for a normal mech) Thing have moved on now and different methods are used.

With the wife working from home too and a one year old in the house, the throne is the only place for peace and quiet for such threads... thanks for sending, shall peruse and find build inspiration, and hopefully answers to my newbie type questions

and that's a 1998 model frame from the serail number as it's made too late in 1997 (August) to be anything other.
It reads something like F708A042 from my best guestimates

Also if you look on the seatube badge, it will hopefully have series 8 tubing, whihc is a big giveaway. though you'll not know to look for that.

The badge is for Series 7.5 tubing. You have the serial number right though
Thanks for attaching the brochure.

Series 8 was the P7. The linked brochure lists 7.2 for the Clockwork. However there may be a transition or typo as a larger 1998 catalogue I have list 7.2 in the blurb but 7.5 in the spec.
Best screenshot I can do on phone at mo.
