Many scenarios. It's quite common that defended layers are crap, but even more common for their clients to think they know better and ignore them.

how did she get permission to be absent from court?? I had to attend every one of mine (for a completely different offense), in Leeds, and I live in Bournemouth

You can enter your plea without attending.

Chances are she has been advised to plead not guilty.

This puts the onus on the prosecution to proceed, and at some point they may decide the case is not going to be worth pursuing. You would never find this out if you pleaded guilty.

If I recall correctly the 'victims' didn't initially make any report or complaint.
