I remember seeing a pic in a mag of a Gary Fisher rider, racing a World Cup event with no granny OR middle ring, just a big ring and a chain device and a n XTR remote shifter on his bar end! XC courses these days are nearly road races! - very poor imho!! I remember going to Dalby Forest in Ye Olden Days to watch an XC Nemba and Frishy turned up on his way back home and rode the Elite race - and pulled out half way thru! too hard for him you see!

That's what I thought it was too! I had one of those triangular frame bags that doubled as a shoulder pad. Ace it was too. Trouble was it lasted so well I went to put it on my new bike (around 1992) and geometry had moved on so far it didn't fit any more!
