Old style BB removal

Another question - can I remove all of this bb and replace with an off the shelf sealed cartridge unit?

Yes you can.Best solution IMO.
You will need to measure bb shell width (68 or 73 mm normally) and bb axle to get the right one.

If you are not re-using then I wouldn't bother with buying a specific tool - as above, drift it out with a hammer and punch.
