Old BASSO GAP > Need help on origin of this bicycle

Tropicaltali

Retro Newbie
Hi everyone,

My name is Lisa I recently acquired a couple of very old bikes which my dad and I are looking to restore.

Do you know by any chance what year this bicycle was created in & if it is of any good quality?

Bicycle looks really beaten up and used...

Thanks so much for letting me know!

Re:

Hi Lisa,

First of all, Basso were and are a quality Italian manufacturer who are still in business, so you have the basis of a very nice bike.

Year is little more difficult, but I would say middle 1980's.

My Gap is an 89 and has the back brake cable guides along the top of the top tube. The 1990/1 that catalogue I found on line shows the cable going through the top tube, so as your cable guides are along the lower left side of the top tube and also the seat stays are a different design to mine and the later models, it would seem logical to assume that your Gap is slightly earlier.

Do a google search for catalogues, they are about on line, so you may well be able to get an exact match.

Good luck with your restoration, I really like my Gap and love the way it rides.

Re:

I agree - middle 80s, by the looks of it. That's going to be a beauty when it's restored (sympathetically!) Let us know how you get on. :)

Thanks for all that fruitful information I am going through the catalogues now. Hopefully this one will ride just as well as yours! I thought mine was from the beginning 1990's.
