Still cool/fun, and predates S.T.I (and yes that's Shimano total integration, and not the more recent Shed tinkering idiot abbreviation....LOL.) (ooops capitals......lol...my bad)
Try turning the thumbshifter to under your handlebars. All the rage BITD.

I'm not particulary keen on the XT thumbshifters.
I do like the Suntour Power control ones though, much better than Shimano!
The only other shifters I like are the M737 XT rapidfire, very clicky and much nicer than the M950 XTR ones.
Modern SRAM is good too.

Non-ferrous frames. Forks that bounce. 21 (and above :shock: ) speeds. Pedals that lock to your feet. Tyres that grip. Brakes that work. Shifters that aren't thumbies.....all things that should be in the 'modern' section,

I run a modern Sram XO gripshift on my full sus it works fine, BITD I tried out the first generation of gripshifters a costly mistake, think they lasted two weeks before they ended up in a box and the deore thumbies were back on !
I imagine they were refined as time went on, the fact that they are still in production today shows they lasted the test of time, I'm planning on using a "period" 7 speed gripshift on my build, but if it's pants I might have to swap it with something more modern !
I also ran thumbies upside down, well we thought it was cool

Well then , to conclude ,
All shifter designs are the best , and they're all s--t too ! :? There is only one thing for it . Sell all three of my geared bikes and get a nice steel single speed , anyone selling ?
