Is it actually any good for off road cycling? The other half has a new job over that way so it looks likely we're moving across there in next month or so *erk*.

Oh..... there's an idea - if anyone has a good two bedroom place to rent in that area let me know. Not paying the earth and its brother mind you!

I go to Richmond Park most Saturdays. It's OK for a training ride. Or better than nothing as the parks round my way are rubbish for cycling. If i remember correctly Whimbledon Common is next door So it's good to cycle both.
ANther option if the weather is good and you have the time. Cycle the Thames river path to Hampton Court the cycle to Esher Common, Oxshott heath, Ranmore common taking you to Box Hill 90 % off road

You don't need a map. It's just one big loop (about 6 miles I think). As Mr Trimble said good for training/early morning burn. I prefer to ride it clockwise. Couple of short climbs and some great fast bits. At weekends you need to be early before the families arrive.

I think the map reference was in response to TinTin's river ride idea....

I did some of my first off road days at Richmond park, back in the early 90's.
From memory it got one or two semi-decent uphill/downhill sections, but I think they made it a bit less bike friendly for off roaders in recent years.

however, the park is beautiful and if you go at a time that isnt too busy you'll have a nice training ride doing a lap.
I used to ride a lap of the park, head out toward Ham/Kingston, and ride along the river to Hampton Court.
You can also head out of the park, head to Bushy Park in Teddington and back again.
If you want a better off road experience then you'll need to head further out.
Box Hill is great, as is Newlands Corner near Guildford.
Virginia Water makes a nice scenic ride (near Windsor, I mustve ridden hundreds of miles there) and into Windsor great Park you can do a 35 mile loop.
At the moment my favourite riding is Bracknell Forest/The Look Out, some awesome purpose built off road sections there.
But I digress....these are a fair amount further out.
Anyways, you'll give up riding once you realise there is a really good bar/pub scene in Richmond...
(but also an expensive but decently stocked bike shop.)

Think they have tarmaced all the paths I used to ride....still...goOd training ride and yes ... you can hook to Wimbledon via the ped. bridge over the A3.

IIRC, Richmond Park is 10.8 miles as a road circuit and there are occasional time trials around it.

Swinley Forest / Look Out is also a fave trail of mine.

For some reason I always forget the 'Swinley' bit, so have to quote Bracknell...
Nearlly wiped out a couple time there last week, great fun.
