Off Road Toad

yeah, thats what prompted me Chris.

Had a mail back from them, very quick, guy in charge used to run Spot, seems like he has some plans, and they could be coming to a Sideways near you sometime in future...

Looks like Chris DeK not be building them, but will be handbuilt in US of A.

Interesting!

How is that any different to buying anything from here or eBay??

Something to do with the fact that you get to see a picture of things you are actually buying on here and on eBay. There are feedback threads on here and on eBay, and there are not too many fantasist trying to make a pseudo comeback of a brand best left dead on here or eBay.

ORT, cooks and Trimble have been talking about comebacks for years, stories about websites becoming live again and new products 'on the drawing board' yet coming to nothing other than hot air and disappointment.

Rather than trading off a dead brand why don't they do something innovative, sure the proto frames are made by CDK but what's the betting the rest of the tigs will come out of a factory in the far east. And why is it that everything on that toad site is 'coming shortly' and has been for an age?

Call or e-mail them, they send you lots of photos of the two frames currently for sale if you ask.

All I know is that they were very helpful with information on my Toads and they were quick to send me some t shirts and reproduction decals so I have reasonable confidence that they will build wou a frame if you want.

I will say that they have the same selling technique as some eBay sellers. They want $1200 for a frame and all they show you is this:

101_2386-2.JPG

So 1 cellphone photo of a frame with no technical drawings, no decent spec, no name builder.

Or an upfront deposit of $1000 on a frame costing $2600 with only 3 stock sizes (no custom sizing on a fillet brazed bike at this price is just a nonsense) and a no name builder?
On-one do a similar thing by getting others to build stock frames but at least they have an established company, named builders such as lynksey and a tested heritage (this ORT cant use the heritage of the old one, too long has passed, all they have is the name) and they charge a big pile less.

Dont get me wrong Andrew, i am certain that they are as bright as a button on sending out decals but what they are doing with the frame sales is bizarre

I agree, how and what they are selling, which is really the business - is bizarre.

They look to be trying to trade off a name, CDK not building anymore, depo up front and crap pictures is just a huge leap of faith.

Which seems at odds with the good quick comms via mail.

Strange.

Try responding to a Nigerian Western Union scammers mail regarding $20mm in a dormant bank account and see how quick they respond.

Now I am not suggesting that the ORT guys are scammers, just that speed of email response is not always indicative of customer service or legitamacy of a business, but is often indicative of how keen people are to get hold of money.

Their business model appears to be on based on zero risk to them. Get 15 'deposits' of $1000, pay the builder $15,000 to build the frames, then charge each customer $1600 extra which is probably the clear profit they intend to make on each frame.

I wouldn't put any money on a bike. All you are buying here is a brand name from history.

They will never be the same bike, just a name on a modern frame, modern steel tubes and dimensions.

Might as well go and buy a custom built frame, or at least and established company like DeKerf, (who build the 9 Horney Toads).
So unless one of the welders is DeKerf or any of the other Rocky Mountain welders at the time or the other company probably interrelated with them Tony/Toby something or other rings a bell ?
P.S. I assume Rod is running the company ? Though the website doesn't really say anything about them :s

Of course somebody has to buy them to help them out, but maybe get some demo bikes built and get them tested over here first.

No chance I putting money down, just find it all very strange as a business 'model'. Just wondering what others views are too.

To not go to any effort with good pics, no description of who/where made, and no delivery date - who would stump up front for this?

Rather get on the Rody waiting list. Cool bikes. Cool guy. Will feel like have something great to own.
