Not sure about that now as you can buy rocks and pebbles from uk beaches at lots of places, Wickes for example :)
Mined from quarries I think.
(Tarmac who supply a lot, probably Wickes, get some from Caysbrigg Quarry)

Under the Coastal Protection Act 1949, the removal of any natural material such as sand and pebbles from public beaches in the UK is illegal.
That bits from the Yorkshire Post.

Think of it this way, get a JCB, go dig it up, keep doing it.
If thousands of people take a few pebbles from or bags of sand from a beach.
What happens.
Which I guess is why it is illegal and can be enforced if they want.

One of them laws, there to protect it if abused.

They look like dog eggs.
What you been feeding Arthur?
You're on the right track with the violent ejection and subsequent cooling theory I think...

I have spent the first day of the year researching the law of the beach

Yes, surprisingly it is illegal, unless you have a permit or are taking minerals more than 50ft below the surface. You can be charged for taking a pebble from a beach, but you can get a permit and take a lorry full :? if convicted you will be liable to a fine not exceeding £10

So, in conclusion, a bag of beach pebbles from Wickes that covers an area of approx 0.4sqm costs £9, therefore, if in the market for some decorative beach pebbles and you require more than the above stated coverage...

..you also get a day at the seaside thrown in

Ffs. There was less fuss about people openly admitting they smoke drugs and in some cases allow their children to do so. (See thread)

No wonder this place is becoming a wilderness.

So glad I shared.

Re:

As is often the case I find myself with concerns at a polar opposite to those expressed by others.
I would like to dump a lot of useless 'decorative hard landscaping materials' on a beach. I guess that is called 'fly-tipping' unless you have some sort of licence, in which case you can call it 'coastal defence' and get paid to do it.... ?

I have one spherical stone about two inches in diameter which I found amongst the roots of an uprooted tree in the forest. I like to think of that stone as my personal planet..

Fuss, what fuss, just chat :)

I have piles of bloody stones the kids have collected over the years from the beach.

I’d incorporate them in a simple garden feature, maybe a low wall or something of that ilk...
