NukeProof Hubs?

Re:

I just picked up a bike that came with some nice old Nuke Proof hubs. Look like these are the bigger, stouter, 3rd gen(?) badged versions.

They look good, I think I'll take 'em for a spin this weekend.

if you have the time, money and inclination… the hubs could be salvaged:

hope it never comes to that with my set of ti Nukeproof hubs, that i'm building up for my Thunderbolt:

It didn't cost me much (iirc - it was 8 years ago!)

But well worth the effort

Question about replacing the freehub body and hub noise

After I've replace it, the hub "honks". I've taken it off a few times over the years to try and see what is causing it, new bearings in the retainer, new retainer, torque super tight, tried locktite, still makes lots of noise when I push on the pedals.

Any suggestions?

Hub is a super fly, that replaced a gen 1 hub that had a similar problem and NP sent me a new set of wheels for next to nothing.

Re: NukeProof Hubs

Anyone know how to remove the axle on the NukeProof Ti hubs? I want to replace the bearings on my set, but I'm not sure if I can just hammer the axle out or if there is a better way to do it.

cheers,

Re:

Hey ladies! ;)

I’m uk based found a chap out in the states who has some carbon hubs has anyone got a trashed on as I’m after the metal part that has the eyelets on as these have damaged eyelets on one side!

Would you be rebonding the aluminum to the carbon? I'm wondering how strong my gen3 carbon & aluminum hubs are after 20 years...?

Re:

Yeah that was the plan... but over night have been thinking the same would I trust 20 year old Kevlar weave!

Kind regards,

Jason

I wouldnt worry, it doesn't degrade. I am sailing a boat with a 20 year old carbon fibre mast.

The thing is, the resins used to glue up the carbon fiber degrade with time, stresses, and UV exposure. Small cracks form and grow and then fail. A sail boat mast is a lot thicker than a hub shell, so it's got a lot more strength and UV damage doesn't penetrate as far.

I've got a set of carbon fiber Spinergy's from the mid 90s when I worked for them. Rode them all over for years. I stopped trusting the front wheel after a decade, now the rear one is retired, too.

My CF Nuke Proof hubs mainly just look cool and remind me of the 90s. Not sure how much I'd really want to ride them.

Hub failure wouldn't be great. Not as bad as wheel, fork, or frame failure, but still...

"Steven Sweat, a bicycle-accident attorney in Los Angeles, says he has worked on numerous carbon-fiber cases, more and more in recent years as the components age. “There are problems with manufacturing, but we’re also just testing the limits of how long carbon can last,” Sweat says."
