Now THIS is how you respond to a mis-posting

Aw shucks... I've only just stumbled across this thread!

I've noticed that Newbies occasionally have a very hard time on this forum when they inadvertently list something in the wrong place, which is an easy mistake to make. Yes, there are rules and yes, in an ideal world everybody would read them before posting, but it isn't, and they don't.

Quite often, the Newbies admittedly go on to make things worse for themselves by getting the hump, but having read some of the first replies to some mis-listings, it's hardly any wonder. I just wanted to point the guy in the right direction rather than put him off coming on this forum altogether, as by the sounds of his listing he's in the same financial situation as I am at the moment!

And I can confirm that Hova doesn't know me from Adam either... Although he's now a set of Chris King wheels richer and a not inconsiderable sum of money poorer..! ;)

I don't see any reason for anyone to be up themselves with new members. There are plenty new members on here, like most forums, who know every bit as much as anyone else about the forum subjects.

Given that most forums are set up differently, don't assume they are idiots just because they don't know how this one is set up.

Personally I cannot stand grammar and spelling correction, as well as all the other pedantic crap that some indulge in.

When I wandered in, I looked through all the forums, figured out what should be posted where (it's pretty much a standard Chat/tech/classified/OT categories model across all the forums on the internet) and hit the ground running. While I agree it's not fair play to chastise new members, it would be nice if they respected the current membership and made the effort to get the lay of the land.

We were all new here once!....for my two penneth worth, lots of people here see rb as a method of self expression, a social event involving friendship and enjoyment away from the bike as well as on it.....some come here to make a fast pound selling kit but don't appear to be interested in contributing to the community.....it does keep fresh kit in the market place for us all, but I understand how some people see it as mercenary!.....the poor grammar thing does annoy me though, I guess our higher average age means we represent the pre text speak generation....anyone who says lol to me should be birched firmly in a public place!.....or pmsl whatever that means!....

If I can give an example of something which is understandably a little confusing to new members, how about the "MTB for Sale" section, right towards the top of the forums?

How is a new member (with an MTB for sale) supposed to know that there is a >1998 For Sale section further down that might be the right place to put it in? It's an easy mistake to make (admittedly if they'd scrolled down they might have come across the correct section), and one which I've seen new members on the receiving end of some very rude responses, of which there is no need.

Just a friendly pointer in the right direction will keep new members on the forum, and make it a better place for everyone. I realise that it's frustrating for some of the longer standing members, but everyone was new once.

People don't (usually) shout and moan at learner drivers for getting the odd thing wrong, so why do it to "learner forumers"..?!?

maybe we could have an automatically imposed "L plate" avatar, for newbies up till say, 50 posts.....

(I know I only just outquallify this)

That's a great idea! Like a default icon which newbies aren't able to change until they hit 20 posts or more (I think 50 might be a bit much!). At least that way, everyone will know ;)
