6 pages! Do I get to claim this thread as my own as it's the longest thread I've ever instigated, even if I didn't initiate it!

Probably.. yes

As far as keeping quiet when a bike is posted that I don't like, I don't think I have ever posted a derogatory remark about someones bike on a thread that they have started (well, possibly with the exception of LGFs 'yellow peril', but that was horrible). I saved it all up for a funny thread in the back end of this site and expressed my views only when asked and only after others had plied me with virtual alcohol. I have no shame about what i said, I stand by every word. It is my view, not that of the site, not one that I will expect others to change to in the same way that others won't change me to theirs

Lets not muddy the water by getting into a 'bike snob' argument though, this is a 'shite bike' thread! There are so many great cheap bikes out there, as I said earlier in this thread - why buy a BSO when you can buy a Stumpjumper or Clockwork for the same cash. If a bike was considered shite 20 years ago then 20 years of sitting in a garage will not have changed it. If a bike was great 20 years ago then it will be iconic today. That is what I thought this site was about, a celebration of what was great in MTBs not a smoke-blow about anything old.

It's not snobby, elitist or arrogant to say that a gaspipe bike with Chi-lee brakes and sub tourney parts is shite. Sure to someone with no interest in the sport or with no care for quality, design and manufacture then it is a great little BSO, an object to get from a to b. To anyone with an interest in the sport, who rides or who stares then it is just a shite BSO. Even the poorest retro biker should not aspire to one of these. People may want one for sentimental reasons but that does not detract from the fact that it is not rare, not historic and is nothing more than white dog shite.

My point is if you have the knowledge then you are able to buy all manner of great things at low prices ,if you had the chance to buy a ferrari at focus prices you wouldn't say no for fear of being called elitist, would you? Look at my bikes, many cost very little: the fat ti that was a swap for an old San Andreas, the Bradbury Manitou that was a bargain on ebay. All about being in the right place at the right time and knowing your onions? My worry is that if no one is ever critical and knowledge is never shared then how are new members every going to know the great stuff that's is out there from the BSOs that appear on eBay?

when you put your point across like that then i am inclined to agree with you for the most part.

I'm not going to participate in the thread in retro chat, the mods have let this one run for a reason, so we don't need another thread covering the same points really, and two mud slinging threads is one too many!

7 pages and counting...

you'd better read this then:

Wow...

Just read the whole cabboodle. I remember writing 'nope, dont like it' on a yellow bike and got all sorts of abuse down the PM line.

Soooo....

IF I post a BSO it is pointed out that it is a BSO and nothing further is claimed about it's prowess - its like spotting a MK1 Fiesta, brings on the rose tinted and you forget you needed a hammer to start it.

I'm happy to point out that a BSO is just a BSO too and have done it, tactfully, so to introduce the poor fella to the site and break him in gently prior to his first enforced FAT purchase. That way, we get a new member and dont scare them off.

Like cheap cars, cheap bikes disappear quicker than white turds in a rainstorm and for NOS BSO material to turn up is indeed a rare and nostalgic event - however it does not mean that it is valuable .

Any retro entry level stuff I find down the tip is presented in such fashion so it can be used as a 'pub bike' or retro commuter etc.

I smiled when I noticed all the early join date members resurfacing with their 'you F off, no YOU F off' comments as that shows some people up for what they are and if they want to go to their secret spooning site, thats fine by me.

I agree with Pete although his use of 'ATB' may have passed over the heads of some and got lost in translation.

Yes, sometimes the truth needs to be pointed out but I feel we are here to educate rather than rant. I know for a fact that the little clickable links of mine bellow have improved no end over the last 2 years thanks to the less vociferous members of RB.

ohh like that is it, i buoy up your 7 page thread
and you dont participate in my longest thread (ever)

bit elitist that
i do agree with the point you make about honesty
but forums are full of sensetive souls ,who stopm off in a tizz at the mearest thing
mebee if posters asked for "honesty" that would help ?

Where do we draw the line though?

Cinder Cone Yes but Lava Dome No?
Stumpjumper Yes Rockhopper No?

or for modern bikes

Cotic Yes but On One No??

Also there are a lot of pricey bling and rare components that just don't work very well are these acceptable? Maybe only if they look nice?

And if we accept that its OK to have a bike just to look at and not ride then what does it matter if its made from gas pipe as long as its got a nice paint job!

talks a lot of sense, but too much to quote

Now there's a man with a sense of proportion and a sense of humour! You're happy to have people make fun and make fun of others without fear of a STW style PC witch-hunt.

Yes you are known as a skip dipper and you pick up bikes from the dump, but anyone who frequents the road section will know that you can pick out a piece of Campa at 100 yards and make a profit on it. The difference is that you have an eye for the quality and the knowledge to back up the finds. Your BSOs are not the end but merely a means to your end, ie make money and buy bikes.

Anyone who cries snobbery at me should look in my house. It is filled with furniture from charity and junk shops. Is it junk? No, it's all 50s and 60s designer stuff that I recognise through reading and researching. It costs no more than Ikea crap but is far better made and is far more of an investment to the level that I sold just a couple pieces to pay for my new kitchen. As with everything in my life i love a bargain just as much as the next man, but I will do my research like LGF before i buy

Sadly too many people buy off ebay without research pay ridiculous prices for junk and then cry snobbery or elitism when people question the purchase.

But nothing will excuse that Trek, nothing.
