'NOS 91 Al Mega - UPDATE PAGE 3

I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like beneath the paint. Judging from the location it doesn't seem like it could have been caused from force. Have the welder take a pic of the area, sans paint, before he/she does the welding. I'm no metallurgist but perhaps the underlying metal isn't in as bad shape as might first appear. Removing the paint in the area will reveal the extent of the weakness if there is one beyond the paint.

I've now stripped away the paint around the affected area, and the metal is cracked underneath :(

My thoughts.....

Based on the photos, it looks to me like the seat post was pushed down too far and cracked the frame at the bend where the seat post could go no further. The shape of the crack would bear that out.

Is this possible or is there a stop inside the seat tube that would prevent this from happening?

I wonder if the seat tube part of the frame escaped quality assurance inspection at the point of manufacture or if it was a result of environmental factors like humidity?

That would make sense. I hadn't thought about it until now.

There isn't a stop inside the frame, so it's possible that the post may have slipped down and hit the inside of the frame, starting the crack...

Going by their reputation for cracking, I'd say that the whole frame escaped quality assurance inspections
