Ok so you may or may not of seen this in eBay watch but I won the nos 82 mountain goat.

Question is what do I do about painting it?

Standard paint on the 82 range was two tone paint with Either camoflague, smoke or rainbow as an option.

Was Russ Pickett painting goats in 82 and should I get him to paint it now?

I'm thinking if I go for a two tone job it really isn't going to matter who paints it, or is it?

I'm not really keen on the colour scheme of the forks so don't want to match the frame to these as I think it will be a bit much.

Or should I have a full airbrush evil dead paint job commissioned which I think would be awesome and period correct on an 82 frame?

Up for any suggestions/opinions.

Chris.

Dunno about Mountain Goat workers history.. but IF Russ was painting them, it would be a good choice to let him do the job - it's like creating the frame's CV.

Great find btw!

Don't see how it matters who paints it, as long as you're prepared to shell out for someone good. The £30 quid powdercoat isn't really an option on this one.

Congratulations! I was sniffing of that nice peace of bicycle art my self, but had to let it go due to to manny unfinished projects. I am looking forward to follow your build.

Have you contacted Jeff Archer at First Flight Bicycles - he is quite a mountain goat fan :)

Yes spoken quite extensively with Jeff, even checked he wasn't bidding on it.

Have dealt with first flight in the past in buying my 2010 goat so know them well and value they're opinion.

But a bit stumped with this one as its so early.

This is my 7th goat and by far in my eyes the most desirable one.

Don't think there are records of who painted them without speaking to Jeff Lindsay.

Chris.

I have the first edition of Rob van det plaz book "The Mountainbike Book" from 1984, and there are pictures of Jeff filet brazing a delux, and I think the text said something about Mr. Lindsay been building these lovely bikes "for some years".

I also buy bits and frame from Jeff Archer he's running a nice operation and have a nice supply of parts and remake of old tires.

Are u building campagnolo rally or old sun tour/TA/ma fac?

Think it will be a suntour mafac TA build as I already have these parts, but not ruling out deer head as that was just about in the same era.

To reiterate my $0.02 worth (from the other thread)... I think anything other than a Russ paint job would be wrong and diminish the value and desirability of the bike significantly. And I think that's true whether you went even for a simple 1-color or fade job (not just the "specials").

Goats were particularly known for their paint and Russ was THE painter of these from even the earliest days. The fact he's still available and still using his earliest methods/materials should make this a no-brainer. This bike would seem to have the potential to be the centerpiece of your collection... You should do it right even if it takes longer and costs more.

What are your plans for a stem and (possible) pump as those would also potentially figure into any appropriate paint work?
