Non carbon allround, dare-I-say, gravel bike ... thoughts

Also have a look at Spa Cycles - always well-thought-out machines in my view.

I'm also increasingly tempted to consolidate a few of my retros into a brand-new all rounder, but I can't get my head around spending more than, say, 2 grand on a bike. "No compromise" is a nice idea, but whatever you buy something better is bound to come along sooner or later.

With that budget in mind, up to now I've been mainly looking longingly at pictures of the Planet X Tempest, but having had a look at Spa's website I agree with hamster. Whereas most gravel bikes seem a bit faddish Spa's range all looks built to do a real world job. The different models span anyone's definition of a "do it all" bike, plus they all come with hand built wheels and well chosen components. Tough to choose the exact spec - e.g. would you rather spend your money on a Ti frame or Hope hubs? But nice choices to have to make!

Those poor poor people that have been sucked into buying a <shivers> 'gravel grinder' around here run too small a front ring on the flat and have barely the use of the last 3 cogs before running out of steam.

At least with Spa Cycles there are some that offer double chainsets
