Non aero brake cable question

Re:

Almost certainly behind the bars with an 11cm. stem.

Here is the science: :?

For any given combination of stem/bars/lever/caliper/frame there is a functionally optimal route and length of cable, which also of course creates the most aesthetically gratifying arc between lever and caliper. It is part of the vexatious charm of these obsolete components that, in conformity with sods law, this functionally and aesthetically optimal cable route is usually blocked by either the stem or the bars, which components are of course already in their functionally optimal position, so the cables end up leaning against the stem or bars. If they could speak, they would be saying: "I say old chap, would you mind awfully shifting your bulky aluminimness out of my route? just half an inch will do.."

...but not to worry, one charming side effect of this deplorable state of affairs is that any roughness in the road causes the cables to rattle against the side of the stem in syncopated harmony, relieving the dull drudgery of your ride.....

YMMV.............. :)

IMHO behind the bar looks more elegant than in front. Another factor to consider is the alignment of the housing and brake. Not a big deal for the rear, but more so for the front.

behind...and if possible crossing just above the stem

Are you bragging - or complaining? ;)

Yes, that is rather an extreme example.

How about adding another 'layer' and fitting some bar end gear levers......................
