No love for Marin?

As a relative noob to retrobike.com and to retrobiking in general there does seem to be a slight look-down-on-marins feel to the forum......nothing major but they are certainly not as popular as some of the other mass-produced brands.

Why this is I have no idea.....presumably (and hopefully) it's based on peoples experiences, rather than just because they don't happen to be fashionable right now.

My experience of Marin? - I had a '93 Bear Valley as a teenager and I rode it everywhere. I loved it to bits and it never let me down - therefore I have a soft spot for that era of Marins. Since getting back into retrobikes I now own a '90 Pine Mountain which is a daily rider and I love it to bits.....

As I've said, completely apart from my personal opinions, I've heard hundreds of people slag off Marin - usually featuring some mention of how incredibly boring they perceive the company and its products to be.

Hundreds !!! Is that two hundred, three hundred or even more? An awful lot of conversations about a boring brand. I'm not sure that I know 300 people ( but then I ride a boring Marin)

Or maybe you exaggerate just a tiny little bit to add a little bit of weight to your own opinions (be more confident, you don't need any justification for your own opinions because that 's just what they are - opinions, not neccesarily facts)

Nope, didn't intend to exaggerate. Scores maybe? You underestimate how much time I can spend chatting shit about bikes. I guess I know 300 people, but most of them don't hold strong opinions on weird old bikes ;) I do however talk to strangers. I'd recommend it. And if they have sweets and puppies, all the better.

(be less condescending, you don't need to dispense presumptive advice on self-esteem to people you've never met)

Don't get in their car, even if they tempt you with a ride on their Marin.

There ought to be scores and scores of ´em here in Denmark, since they was sold from a chain of stores, that also sold Hifi. I can keep a lookout for ´em if there is interest.

BITD I rode with many folk who loved them. I never took a shine to them. I now own one more out of curiosity than anything else. It's a bit of a shed hack 1994 Marin Grade, and to be honest so far it's at the top of the list to go. It's functional, but doesn't generate a love cosy feeling at all. Someone said they make great loaded touring long haulers; I have to agree - only an assumption though.

Hate this... ;)
