Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year

Oh well, scratch that idea, then. The weight should be a reasonable indicator, at least :)

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year

Well I may have some good news, bike weighs just over 4lbs in 18.5" size complete with headset cups and dirt ;)

The seat post is 26.8. Still unable to find any other numbers/marks but do I get to call is a Zaskar?

Started polishing last night, had to stop as was told I spend too much time with the bikes!

'92 Pantera - bare frame. Unless the paint weighs 13oz, I guess yours must be a Zaskar - really don't see what else it can be :)

Excellent. Five minutes of polishing the top tube with Autosol as that's all I have right now saw it come out like this. Pretty pleased :) No time for more as going out for a ride.

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year

I had a long discussion/ beers with a frame builder (aluminium/ steel and some ti). A taiwan frame is welded by many people - each person welds just one area at a time, like a production line, whereas a US built frame may be tacked by one person then welded by another.

The welding is a little too neat and the 'pits' from the start/ finish weld/ pits are in the 'wrong' places - they start where the stress points are.

Thats from a technical point of view...

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year

My Zaskar's quite a lot later, but one thing I've noticed is that the welds are *much* neater than on the Pantera. Around the headtube in particular they're seriously scruffy - see below.

In the catalogue, though, they're so similar, it's hard to spot any difference. The thing that makes me think this is a Zaskar is the weight - I find it hard to believe there would have been a 13oz discrepancy between frames from the same model and year...

'92 catalogue pics. The Zaskar's got pretty chunky welds in this pic too, maybe they were still getting the hang of it :)

Also the UK spec for the Pantera was massively different to the catalogue. About the only thing in common with what we got in the UK was the frame and forks...

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year

It's all so confusing ;)

Thanks for your input guys. Just got back from a ride so cleaning the wheels up now. Tomorrow before work its more frame polishing and then parts cleaning.

Got a lovely set of XT M732 cranks with black rings and same model qr's on the way so it's all going swimmingly.

Re:

Cool project.

The top tube/head tube gusset on your frame says *Zaskar* to me. The Pantera ones are a slightly different shape on bikes I've looked at.
Where are you reading that oddball serial number from ?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year

Paddy the serial number is on the BB shell.

As it was a lovely sunny morning and I'm not at work until tonight, decided to get the parts from the frame I'm using cleaned. Very happy with how they've come out and the wheels too which have Splashbacks on for now as they were close to hand.

More frame polishing this afternoon and then it's time to sort the forks.

This is probably a stupid question, the headset is 1" on this and uses loose bearings. Anyone know if I can use caged bearings and will any set of 1" caged bicycle headset bearings work?
