Newbie - 1995 Kona Cinder Cone - Refurb

Re:

You need to get yourself a photobucket account. Then you can upload photos to the forum

Glad to hear the build's going well. I bet you'll be really pleased when it's all together again

Hi ant......sorry for delay, I just picked this one up!......

Yeah, glad my build has spurred you on a bit. Mine was a garage find a couple or three years ago, and is pretty much full original spec.....great riding bike too!......

Glad to be of help if you need it matey........

No worries buddy. There's nothing wrong with being fashionably late :)

We'll have to meet up when I've got the new bits on the bike. It'd be good to see what they actually look like in original spec

....Oh and if you need it I sourced a very close colour match via my local generic car parts supplier .. I'm sure the paint code is on touch up bottle I can check if you want the code ?

Good luck

Thanks Col,
If you could find out the paint code you've got that'd be brilliant

The BMW I saw the other day is painted in ATLANTIS METALLIC, and has a BMW paint code of 399

I've checked this on the BMW forums and there seems to be a bit of discussion about this colour

Sometimes it's called Atlantis Metallic, sometimes it's Altantis Blue

Sometimes it's paint code is listed as 399, sometimes as 399/5

Somebody else gave me a number 51911052552

I think I'll get some of this and compare it with the other paints people have used previously

Anyway, here's a photo showing the sticker in the engine bay

I've brought the bike home from work for the weekend so I can do a little more cleaning whilst waiting for the bits to arrive

Hopefully I can get some touch up paint tomorrow too

I've just put the bike on the scales, and we seem to be sitting somewhere around 25lbs
I know that's not entirely accurate as the press bikes weighed more than that with a smaller from and P2s fitted
But, it gives me a datum point to refer back to as time goes on

That's looking great already, get the new bits on, get it all working and then use it

It does make too much sense to refinish this especially when the original paint is ok

Hi

Here's a pic of my touch up bottle .. malaguti(Italian scooter/motorbike) folks

Green valley 407 .. Can't find much online maybe make sense to local motor factors ?

Good match either way if you look back early on my thread you'll see :)

Got this in the post this morning

Not NOS, but in very good condition really

I've polished up the worn bits on the cranks, but it appears they're coated with a clearcoat (or something else) from new

The parts where it's worn through are now super shines, but the rest of the cranks have stayed as they were

Does anyone know what the coating is, and what's the best way to tidy the cranks up?

I'd rather not strip them entirely as the decals are perfect, but I'll gladly listen to all suggestions

Also, is it ok to strip and/or repaint the larger gear, as I'd like it to be silver

Re:

The cranks are anodised silver, so getting an even sheen where there is heel rub is difficult. Try to flat the polished bit with a bit of very fine sandpaper or 3M-type pad.
The large chainring is also anodised - removing the finish is easy, but easier still to buy a silver chainring. Don't paint it - the finish would last seconds in use and clog your chain to boot!

Hey Giles, thanks for the advice

I'd actually ruled it out as being anodised as I thought this finish was on top of the surface rather than in it.......shows what I know :)

I've got some 1500 and 2000 grit paper that would probably get the worn areas looking quite close to matching the rest of the crank, but to be honest the cranks actually look pretty cool with the worn bits polished up........kind of "used but not abused"

I hadn't even thought about paint clogging up the chain. Pretty obvious once it's pointed out to you

I'll most likely swap the chainring for a silver one after its built up and I've ridden it a bit

Not a bad little project really is it?
