Re:

The Raleigh 40th anniversary frame/bike is featured in this month's Cyclist magazine. With explations as to how component decisions were made for it.

I didn't buy the mag though. Too many SLOPING top tubes for me! Just a flick through in the newsagents.

Re:

Just curious, could an 'ordinary' amateur rider get a frame made by the SBDU? If so how much did it cost compared to the other builders that they could have gone to?

Yep, anyone with the cash could order a custom frame, back in my time there was allegedly an H number stamped on the BB to denote a custom frame. The cost depended on what you wanted..... an off the peg SBDU 753 was the same as a Viner Stella, about a 3 month wait and £140 rings a bell?

Re:

£140 would have been a typical cost for a normal 531c non sbdu Raleigh frame in the late 80s, so I'm assuming you're referring to the 70s ??

Thanks! Didn't know that at all. :)

Re:

This is my 1980's Ribble built in Reynolds 531c..."it's basically the same a Joop Zoetemelk's Tdf winning bike".
Strangely enough the frame is a size 53 CTC and the tube dimensions are the same as the new Ti 40 in a size 53 CTT. :)

Re:

Finally got round to unboxing mine. Dressed it up with more period kit. Just needs a rear derailleur cable and tweek. I'll let you know how it rides

It's got 126mm hubs in for the moment - I have a longer axle from wheels manufacturing to fit and a few washers to fit it properly
