I run 100mm forks on my Caldera originally speced with 63mm forks

&

I run 63mm forks on my RTS that was originally speced with 48mm forks + these forks may be replaced with 80mm forks.


IMHO neither of which disrupt the handling too much in my eyes.

Modern RS forks have quite a short axle to crown height height compared with modern MArzochhi forks.

Thanks! The Pickle might have hit top trumps so I should be alright.

Checking out the dimensions yesterday it's interesting to see how much they've changed. Bottom to crown on my Judy's is 440mm, only one Rock Shox comes close; the Duke 03-05 at 439mm.

The way this re-build is heading is that everything is going to new except the frame and fork.

if its a '97 Kona then you can bang pretty much any fork on it you want up to 100mm travel regardless of axle to crown i think. After '94 Kona never altered their hardtail geometry meaning that your Kona has the same geometry as a modern day Kula. So i've was told by our number 1 Kona guru Anthony. I run an '04 Fox Float 100RL on my '95 Kilauea and it handles just fine

Modern Konas have slightly slacker angles. The modern HT´s like the Kula have a HA of 69.4, whereas older models were around 71 degrees.

Forks

Don't fanny around, just get a set of Rockshox dual air 100 or 120 matters not. You can adjust the travel from zero to max with the two air chambers, they are stiff, light and ramp up well. Fox are unreliable and too linear with no ramp up. Marzocchi are just garbage awful junk. My LBS sells all the current makes and they have less trouble with modern RS than anything else and sell twice as many as anything else. They get more than half the Fox back and more of the Marzocchi.
Strangely they have few problems with modern Manitous too.

On my Hei Hei I'm running a Recon U-Turn lowered by swapping the standard spring with the one from a Duke U-turn.

This way I get the stiffness of a modern fork, a short axle to crown lenght, and some extra travel for the downhills.

Air forks from Rock Shox can also be lowered by using nylon spacers.
