"New" gears for my proflex 957?

With my rebuild I fancied trying to refresh some of the gearing, and found someone on a local car forum who offered me some Shimano Deore bits. What I got here is the following

XT 9 speed chain & cassette
Silver Deore rear mech (Says "Shimano Mega drivetrain" on it)
Matching front mech
3 speed / 9 speed separate shifters (I'm sure my oem is integral with brakes....)
Front large & small chainrings (would need my own middle one)

I am probably thinking all I will end up using are the two mechs which are in real good nick, and the XT chain..... All to be assessed once I get some bits so I can start the build. Headset should arrive soon. :D

Would the original chain not be an 8 speed?
A 9 speed chain is narrower

damnit! Looks like I will be needing to buy a new 8 speed chain then (shows how much of a newb i am with MTBs....)

I "might" be able to salvage my old chain but I think by the time I come to re-chain it up, it will be pretty rusty! :(

I just got this from CRC

Good price at 11.99 delivered & works well on my XP-X. I also use the Sram powerlink, makes it really easy to clean - dishwasher does a great job, but misses not happy.

Have you got the 957 all shiny? One bike I've always fancied.

Got the XP-X & got a carbon Oz last year. Just need a 957 now.
