new commuter giant boulder 550

I have been looking at used chainsets and only seems to be about a £5 more to buy new if not cheaper but would be nice to keep cost s down as this is just my commuter

Silly question but you are turning the locking ring the correct way? And the sprocket tool is inserted fully into the recess, be careful coz when it goes it will go and many a retrobiker has had skinned knuckles as a result.

a ruddy great big hammer!!!

one thing I had success with was to clamp my cassette tool into the vice (i bought one with a handle, not a ratchet one) then slot the wheel onto it, apply the chain whip & use the extra leverage of the wheel rather than the little bit you get from a tool.

if your on a ratchet type tool, find a length of bar, slot it over the end & give yourself a bit more leverage. finding a volunteer to hold the chainwhip also helps as you can get a better grip.

Got my gf to take my wheel to the lbs today to remove the cassette and its a bloody free wheel !!! So i am now in need of a new rear wheel and jax is sorting me a chainset when he gets chance and then just need to get some tyres and i am finished for now

i've not forgotten you - you'll have a choice too. a 5 arm shimano one (unsure of model) or a 4 arm slightly more modern alivio one.

i'm off all week (with maybe the exception of thursday night) so if you wanted to bring the frame over & get the cranks switched out your more than welcome.

re: the freewheel, have you thought about using a bmx style rear cog? i think you may be able to just bolt one straight on but not 100% certain.

Can do mon, tue and the week end boss, and the alivio sounds spot on

Think i have to have the rim re-dished and a free wheel is about £10 so may as well just pick up a cheap wheel i think.
