new commuter giant boulder 550

Oh, just to let you know Bars and Stem are winging their way across to you as per dispatch instructions.

Just been reading back through this thread, thought i may give you some food for thought on my Single Speed Conversion.

Initially i had 2 x old rear cassettes which were really cream crackered and not worthy of fitment. I filed off the heads of the pins holding them together. Hey presto i was left with 10 x Plastic spacers and a selection of loose cogs. Using my Hub i was able to slide on the spacers and choose a suitable cog continue to pack out with spacers and screw on the retaining disc.

Getting chain tension is dependant on the length of the stay, size of front chain ring and rear cog. I could not get it to work with no form of tensioner so invested in a DMR Single Speed kit which came witth spacers and dedicated rear cog.

This made for a much neater set-up and provided us with a great riding expierience :) Happy Days, some Schwalbe City Jet Tyres fitted and my lightweight ride was sorted :)

Hope this gives you food for thought,

Jussa :)

nice bike boss, just the kind of inspiration i need

Just been to the lbs in chorlton, said that they would only want £15 to fit a ss kit but said i might need a new wheel if the cassette was fixed which would cost about £45 :? does anyone know how i can check this ? also will be after a ss kit and tensioner if anyone has one they wish to sell, but unfortunately will not be able to buy till sturday as i think the other half will kill me if i buy any more bike bits this week

DIY mate its easy and cheap and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself. And will keep her indoors happy :)

First of all you need to see what hub you got on, two types cassette & threaded or screw on, either way it's a similar method to remove them or ask you LBS to do it for you. Then the rest is easy, for a cassette hub, or splined new rear cog on sandwiched between spacers is all you need, for threaded you will need a threaded freewheel similar to what you used to get on BMX's fixed wheel is to be avoided until you get used to single speed, then fixed is only for the hardcore lol, I kept mine so I could freewheel :)

Hey I may be able to Karma you a rear sprocket and spacers if you have a cassette hub then all you need is a tensioner? I can even supply some pics to help you assemble it? Save you paying out ££££'s

ye that would be amazing, pm me with a price boss. going to take my wheel to lbs shop tomorrow and see what type of hub i have got, also was wondering if i am going to need a new chain ?
