I'm holding fire for now - my friend kas already bumped into the boost/ none boost/ SRAM Shimano splined 12spd what whats are what, let alone axle size and BB type

Literally just bought one, an On-One Scandal XL 29er with boost hubs etc.
Realised that although I still like retro, many of the trails I want to attempt to ride have been modernised to the requirements of modern bikes. Only way I can thus ride them is join the now because the bikes of then don't quite cope, though also the aging me also does not quite cope

Quite....been holding fire for 30 years now!
But given my mates experience of microspline / chinesium cassettes etc, i may hang on another 30....just to make sure the spares are still available.
Agreed. My 2008 hasn't received as much attention the last couple years since getting back into vintage but it's a do-everything-bike, 26" wheels. Light enough to climb hills as well and still has more appeal to me than current offerings:
