Never use Paypal Gift!!!

You should be able to put in a claim via the Small Claims Court. Whether you can get the judgement enforced is another matter, as you would need to hire bailiffs to collect it.

Re:

Tbh I think I've spent too long on here dealing with a friendly community that doesn't tend to piss up your back and was careless when applying the same attitude to other forums.

Anyway, plenty of people still quite happily pay or sell by PP Gift. I reckon 90% of my Retrobike transactions have been done this way so the point of the thread is tell those who do to stop or at least be very careful.

Well I wont be using Paypal Gift after reading this. Really sorry to hear this Ed, shocking news. Cyber crime always seems to be a low priority to the law, like you said, if you went into a bank and stole £835 quid they would be all over you! anyway don't know what to say, just sorry to hear such sad news buddy.

I've no idea why they still refer to it as "Gift" or "Friends and Family".

Should just be "Unprotected cash transfer."

Re:

Can you not use the same tactics against them. Contact your bank with details of the fraud and get them to recover your £. Assumi g your PayPal account is linked to your bank or credit card?

Sorry to hear about this of course. Been bitten myself but not to the value you have. Don't let the actions of one affect you, there are more honest people than fraudsters.

Re:

If you see your bike on Ebay again, buy it, pay for it via paypal using a credit card. When you recieve the bike put a claim in via ebay & paypal as you have recieved a stolen item, provide crime number etc. If this doesn't work make a charge back on the credit card. beat the Fxxxers at their own game.

Re:

Man ...... I feel for you.

I do feel that you have been royally stung, I only buy and sell on here using pp gift as I can check back through their profile to see the amount of input they have made to the forum, then I would decide if its a transaction i can live with if it goes sour, short of asking for cash through the post or bank transfer I can see no other way....I'm in no doubt that one day I will be stung......

Personally I wouldn't use any of the Facebook sites for selling or buying, it's just too much of a gamble.... They could be anybody.

Where is the seller based out of interest? Maybe someone here could 'take it for a test ride

Re:

Thanks all. The scammers seem to be based around Liverpool and Southport. I'll put their details up when I get time.

Re:

Really sorry to hear about this. Rest assured that you won't have any bother with me and the Clockwork sale!

I think that you've been really unlucky on this one. I have to say that I've been scammed and otherwise ripped off and abused as a buyer and a seller on multiple occasions thanks to (routine) misuse of eBay and PayPal's buyer protection schemes, but when dealing on trust, on forums, and using PayPal gift payments, I've never had a single issue.

And at the end of the day, over the years I've quite probably paid more to eBay and PayPal in fees than the £800 you've lost. It's a gamble either way, but the house always wins...

Facebook obviously is a different thing altogether. I have to say I'm as surprised as you were at the angle the con artists have used to pull this, but in all honesty, the sum of money involved and the "it's for a mate" line would probably have rung alarms bells to me... that probably reflects badly on me - I think trust is better for your karma and overall outlook than paranoia.

And on that score, it seems to me that your karma is strong enough that you'll get it back one way or another. Don't lose heart.

Furcking hell that's awful.

I feel so bad for you - thanks for sharing the details as I'm always buying AND selling with PP friends, so far happy to report no issues.

As others have advised, explore as many avenues as possible with regard to the fraud upon yourself in an effort to recoup some of it.

I hope you get somewhere.

I hope Craig - whoever he is - catches bum aids and dies a severely slow and painful death. :(
