Never the twain shall meet... or maybe?

it's that time for me to consider treating myself to a new bike. Early fifties now and not into speed as such, comfort and endurance, and climbing is my bag these days. Im enjoying 25''s tyres (fancy 28"s :)), and dinner plate on the back for those hills..
Ive been considering maybe buying a older titanium frame and building up with a 11speed 105 or similar. Or maybe even steel that would take such a set. It all just feels a little 'wrong' somehow..

I guess what Im asking is should I keep the retro side free from the modern side or just mix and match to my hearts desire??

Thoughts??

I run a 1979 Witcomb with 28C. It was originally made for 27" wheels so the 700x28C fills the gap nicely. With a nice fast tyre like Conti GP5000 it really rolls well and is incredibly comfortable at the same time. It all looks right to me.

Nothing wrong with a MGOOF bike. There's a 100+ page thread of pics on LFGSS: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/212733/

My next build is probably going to be 10-speed in an old 120mm-spaced frame. I'm fairly sure with with the 5/6/7-speed hub I have, I'll be able to fit 9 of the 10 gears in by taking a cog off and removing a 5mm axle spacer. I just need to check the clearance of the smallest cog on the chainstay. Then it's just a matter of deciding whether to go full MGOOF or disguise it by using mostly older components and Dura Ace 10-speed indexed downtube shifters.

I re-spaced mine to 130mm, it's really not hard to do. I then added a 1999 Chorus groupset (no carbon or silly crank shapes thank you).

The frame is *cough* patinated, but not quite so scruffy that it needs to be repainted.
