My First Full Suspension Bike (Not What you Think)

Well, today I removed the paint and a fair amount of rust from the back triangle. The rest of the paint is staying. I also cleaned the chainset which took ages as the old oil/crud seemed to be baked on. I have cleaned the brakes as best I can along with the front wheel although quite a lot of rust has happened.

The rear rim is very bad. I think it is not worth saving so I will try and find a replacement 16" rim and have a go building the wheel hopefully with the existing spokes.

I spent a happy hour or so this afternoon stripping, cleaning, lubing and rebuilding the Sturmey Archer hub. I think it has a pawl spring missing so I need to fing a new one. That said, it all went back together ok and seems to work with a much nicer sounding freewheel click!

7/16 and 11 are so close they are basically the same size. I've got a crossover socket set with both and it doesn't have a 7/16 because the 11 is close enough. It's Whitworth where nothing ever fits. It's right bang between both and it's a flipping annoyance :D

I think you've got a bit of a gem there.

The rear hub is a Sturmey S3B which should change gear ok but has the worlds worst drum brake. The bottom bracket is that old Raleigh affair - 26tpi and is rather wide, makes changing it a bit of a challenge. Rims, I imagine 28h, Brompton 349's will suit.

Check your front forks, I can't tell from the picture but if the bike has been crashed and they are bent back you will have a rather odd ride. The fork legs should be 'in line' with the steering tube.

If you want to sell it, let me know! ;)

You won't build up the back wheel with the old spokes unless the new rim is totally identical. Once you get the right size one's it'll be easy enough though.
