Agreed, this is not the worst I've done. It's coming around nicely so far.Having collected and restored a fair few Raleigh kids bikes from the 70s during the mid 90s, the state of the rack looks normal to me! Not sure anyone can afford to get stuff rechromed anymore as the cost today is absolutely insane.

plastic is made from oil. when it ages it loses the aromatic portions of the oil, they oxidise. adding oil back to it with peanut butter is adding back some of the aromatics. they might not be the right one's but will make them black again. you could do similar with heat which draws the same from inside the plastic, but it will eventually become brittle if you do this.What chemistry is going on there Dave?
