Mutiple splatter paint kona content, page 18/19 for latest builds

Re:

Switched my attention today to the 89 Explosif and got cracking getting the drive train on and all set up :) The only things i've left off are the new HG70 cassette and chain,i'm going to wait until i've had the new Deore ll hubs fitted before doing that part.
Next stage to complete is getting the brakes on and set up properly, any tips on how to get the U-brake set up properly would be greatly appreciated because i've never tackled one of them before :? All the instructions basically say is bolt them down in the open position :|

NOSness

:D just need a new Denton's cycles sticker for the finishing touch. I found out that an ex employee has been allowed to use the brand name and original Denton Cycles logo. I'm going to email him to see if he can reproduce the bike shop sticker for the downtube and get 7 of them made.

Re:

A little bit of fine tuning to the brakes and gears and it'll be ready for its group photo shoot.

You'll find it'll shift more smoothly with the cable crossed on the down-tubes. At that angle the cable rubs more on the guides, especially on the rear mech routing.

I think it's everyone to their on when it comes to cable routing,i've ran the cables in both types of ways and never really noticed a difference, they just change gear as they should.
Plus i cannot be bothered to pull the cables back threw and reset the gears again, they work that'll do for me

That's true. It's also how they came out the factory (and therefore designed) ;)

Out of curiosity today,i had the time to take both the explosifs out one after another round the block, shifting up and down the gears. The 89 has crossed cables and the 90 has straight run cables and i can honestly say there is no difference what so ever in the way they shift gears, the 89 has nos Deore ll and the 90 has used m-732 XT
From what i remember it might of been specialized back in the late 80's early 90's who done the cross over cables and back then what ever specialized did all the mainstream company's tended to copy so it's probably just stuck as the thing to do.

Absolutely loving this thread. The 1989 models bring back some cracking memories.
I have been riding my 1990 Cinder Cone almost exclusively this year and it is one of the best bikes I can remember riding.
I have even raced it in some local events and finished in the top ten.

Glad your liking it MRGRUMPY it's been really enjoyable finally getting them all built up how i want them looking. The splatter paints are my favorite bikes especially the 89 model years. Think it's to do with the way they splatted them and that there isn't another like the one you own, there one offs in a way. They might all look the same but put two together of the same model and there totally different with the way that person splatted the paint on and what mood they were in.

I bet there's a few shocked looks on some riders faces who are riding modern bikes when your overtaken them on the cindercone  Out of the 90's bikes that's the one i probably like the most, the explosif is good but there's something about the way the cindercone rides what i like more. Although i haven't finished building the 1990 fire mountain yet so that might end up being the top bike ;) :D
