1990 Kona Cindercone

Finally it's ready for a shake down ride tonight 😃 there's still bits to do though but i want to take it for a spin first. Bit of a contrast next to the Explosif, Kona certainly toned the colours down 😅

Quick little ride along to the local Quarry to get some dirt on the tyres, a couple of swans were admiring the bike 😅
First impressions reacquainting myself with a 90 Cindercone again are good and can't wait to get more miles out on it. Notable things : front brake is crap with the brake pads set the way i put them, thought i would try the way they are on the M737 XT ones, nah 😅
Rear hub felt draggy so probably needs a service so i'll stick the Deore LX wheels off the 93 Cindercone for the time being.
And the Avocet Racing saddle still is the most comfortable saddle ever lol
Also what a difference the bars being 610mm wide compared to the normal 560/580 width.

Certainly are comfy saddles. The whole riding position compared to later models is more comfy I find.

That Explosif is a work of art Spanky - lovely bike. Cindercone looks great too. I have never owned a Kona but they were always on my list when looking for a new bike.
Cheers, yeah i loved that Explosif really wish i never sold it. Crazy thing is i've had two 90 Explosifs one with Track Two's and that one with the P2 's and it's always that one i wish i still had. I think it's because i had to add all the pink and blue splat by hand to the forks to match the frame.

Swapped the wheels over ready for another test ride, just waiting for the rain to stop for a bit.

Looks great!😍 You’d get more power out of that front brake by dropping the height of the straddle cable hanger, however the design of those hangers is to keep the straddle cable at 90 degrees to the brake arm!

Always liked the look of Kona’s but being a shortie 5’ 7”/170cm the head tubes on them always seemed overly tall and weren’t great for goolie clearance. Almost bought a 89 Cinder Cone from Schmoo’s cycles as my first mountain bike, but ended up getting a MBK Hi-Tech Ranger from a bike shop in Cardiff instead. Never mind eh?!* 🤣 (and yes, that had a big bloody head tube too?!*)

I’d appreciate a taller head tube these days! It’s not my back as you hear most people comment about, but neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands etc…

Also, might look a little cleaner/more retro if you removed the logo off the seat post. Should come off with nail polish remover/acetone etc.
