My parents signed me up for classical guitar at the age of 11 and I hated it so never practised until the teacher begged my parents to make it stop. Then at 16 my buddies and I decided to form a band -- we all had roles but only the drummer and I ever got the gear and learned basic stuff. It fizzled out as so many of these things do. Then 20 years later I bought a Telecaster and taught myself some basic stuff; was part of a band for a couple of years but all we really did was rent practice space and make a racket while drinking beer.

All that's left of that period now is my Japanese Fender Esquire, which I just can't get rid of -- from the moment I first picked it up it was the most resonant, easy-to-play guitar I'd ever had and it's still fun to play my three chords on, maybe twice a year. It has a black scratchplate now, btw.

Definitely keep hold of that Esquire, @moonlite Japanese Fenders are always good quality and sought after, especially the older ones; even at only 20 years old it may be made from nicer wood than is used now. Probably never be worth a fortune but should keep its value.

A black pickguard will certainly look the part. What's the neck like?

Nice set up. I see you have a B pro one … nearly bought one of those earlier in the year. Also clocked a Korg sq1 there … fun little sequencer 😁

1st guitar ever bought recently. 1st lesson next week. Guy in the music shop recommended this Telecaster Squier 'Made in Japan' over newer models at the same money. Retro 😎.
Excellent -- hope the lessons go well. Have just been deep in a text conversation with my stepson who has decided he'd like to learn bass so he can jam with his drummer flatmate. I'm all for this kind of thing.
