Muddy Fox query

Old Ned

Old School Grand Master
A couple of days ago I was given this frame and bits by a travelling scrap man that I gave some sheet metal to from my garage. It was on the back of his truck so he let me have it. He also said he would keep me in mind if he came across anything else (so here's hoping he finds a Colnago or something!).

Can anyone offer any info on it? It appears to have had a nice Purple anodised finish at one time which has been scraped off. The bars and stem are Bigfoot and look reasonable. I don't know the chainset but the gears are Alvio and seem a bit shot. The brakes are no good.

Forks are lettered Suntour and still have a bit a 'bounce' in them. Are they worth servicing? I don't know if they're springs, elastomers or hydraulic. Any answers?

Honest opinion.......give it back to him next time he visits.

No worth investing any time and effort into I'm affraid.

Not got any info to add but wouldn't throw it away - you could rebuild it from the frame at least if you want a bike out of it :)

looks a bit strange to me, the frame looks like an early one, similar to my alu pro of 91 but with a replaceable hanger which suggest newer by a few years and the purple suggests 92/93, the alivio gearset suggests 96, but the big foot components suggest more recent. then the headset has been played with to fit a v brake only fork but the alivio stuff is canti only so the parts are all muddy fox own brand but suggest a mix of 2 bikes but badly done.

my advice would be if you like the frame and it is structurely sound build it and use it but i would bin alot of the parts, the big foot stuff is basic but ok, the alivio stuff again is basic but ok but looks worn out.

things can always be resurected, my 93 clockwork came from a scrap heap! and now it is perfect! :D

ditto above
However, is that a big f-off crack running forward on the top of the chainstay of the drive side dropout. . ? :?:

I remember the purple anodised frames from around '94 but cant remember what the model was. The forks are from some time this century.

Its time to strip and parctice your polishing technique! (the frame that is...)

come on mate......... thats not in the spirit of things :!:
if the rear chainstay is cracked then i will agree with you, if its just a scratch , then hell yea its worth a bit of TLC, it could be a nice ridable MF . a bit of work here a bit of work there and a cheap donor bike. hey presto you have a nice bike. :)

I would dispose of the forks as even when up and running and new I dont think they were any good

I like the frame I think it has some charactor.

I would be tempted to stip of the parts clean them up checking for wear etc and keep the good ones.

Then finish stripping the purple anodizing with some Mr Muscle or something - >>> Edit http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45480 - then polish and rebuild - cheap build.

Happy days ;)

That doesn't look like anodising to me, it's some kind of coloured lacquer, some Nitromors will fetch the rest off.

Anodising don't chip off. ;)
