what would you do?

Got my hands on a 1990 muddy fox pathfinder in purple and gold speckle and the frame is in great nick- will scrub up nice  .

Heres the rub, the stuff hanging from it is pretty poor really, early suntour xct stuff.

I only indend to use this bike as a work bike and as such I didn't want to throw any money at it really. However these parts kind of anoy me, I thought that keeping it orig. spec. would be enough of an argument to convince me to leave it well alone- it does kind of look right (from a distance  ) but it is heavy as f@ck and the plastic canti's and xpress shifters are painful to use and look at, that and the fact that the muddy fox branded saddle weighs the same as my 1 year old is really bugging me  .

I have come to terms that I am a bit of a bike snob and everything does work and will do the job but I'm still unsure what to do............spend money on it or just leave it well alone and ride it?

What would you do?

It's a fine looking bike. For a commuter, just keep using it until the bits die, then replace with what you have to hand.
I think that's a valid but often ignored stance on Retrobike - in the past, we just would have swapped parts over when they wore out. We wouldn't have given a toss about period correctness.

Scrap the canti's and get yersel a ubrake on that chainstay should make you go faster  Seriously I would hover ebay for any suntour bits and swap accordingly ditch the gaurds and either fit sks ones or a blackburn mountain rack and crud catcher, some nice conti slicks and a close ratio cassette will work wonders. Wouldn't worry too much about lightening it as it won't really have too much effect just think of it as extra training :D

This obviously has nothing to do with a muddy fox hill climb race someone mentioned

Depends how much of a retroer you are. I'd replace with new kit as and when needed. But others on here would have a heart attack at the very idea  And would put period correct on it and then sit and look at it till they die.

errrr.........mebes aye mebes naw  Mind you the saddle would be good for throwing at you to slow you down- padding was everything BITD so it would seem.

I have already yielded to the dark side  - getting a Ti saddle, will be replacing the wheels with xt mavic 217's and have some sport contacts in the garage (good call Kaiser). I was ment to have some thumbies coming to but someone has went radio silent on me  It is going to be a commuter so it should act like one I suppose- big problem now is that it makes my Gary Fisher redundant anyone want a slightly broken/and then fixed/ and then breaking again/ and then fixed for good- Ti frame?

Friend of mine had one of those and I do remember the XCT group being pretty s**t

IMO I'd just see what cheap parts I could pick up on here and replace parts over time

your not wrong- the brake levers are made of tin and the rapidfire shifters are made from melted down milk cartons- mind you the front der. does look very cool, I will post some pictures to show you what I mean.

Also the rear cassette does not have a lock ring, some sort of plate with two holes WTF is that all about?

Sell it to me you swine! Been looking for one of these...
That was my first "real" bike there, loved it and put thousands of miles on it, then the downtube snapped clean through
I know for a fact that the gy who had it before me had abused it tho - i was the one that had to keep fixing it

will give you first refusal bennyboy- I will need to thin the herd at some point in the next few months so if I'm not feeling the love for the mudster my avitar will be changing
