MTB trouser thoughts ?

Can't find a link, but Columbia used to make a great 3/4 length pants out of ripstop nylon under the GRT label. Covers your knees, but stays out of the chain. Unfortunately, not waterproof though. Combine with some removable lycra leggings and you're warm(er) and not too embarrassing!

Lately they use a hydrophobic fabric on some of their gear, but the water soaks through after a minute and I find it catches on the saddle.

Re:

About 2 years ago I bought some Endura waterproof trousers, think they might be the MT500??
I usually ride in shorts no matter what the weather, but these Scottish winters can be bloody harsh! Cold, and very wet.
I probably only wear them a handful of times each year, on the coldest, wettest days, and I'm really glad I bought them! They keep me (especially my ass) warm and dry, and look perfectly at home on a mtb. I either wear shorts or cycling tights underneath.
On most other winter days I'll wear shorts, the Roubaix winter tights get worn on the road/cx bike, I just don't think tights and baggy shorts are a good look at all!
