Most popular ATB ?

Were I live probably Giant. The Taiwanese offered a lot bike for your money. Carbon for the masses with the Cadex models.

Most popular? I'm not sure how to measure 'popularity', but the most sold would probably be something like a Raleigh Lizard.

I'd agree that around here Marin, Kona and Giant were the most seen bikes, and totally because they were the most affordable proper bikes stocked in the local shops. There were a few Oranges around too, and my school was overrun with muddy foxes, but saw few actually being ridden... New forest area, so GA cycles, Hargroves and Cycleworld were my locals.

I think this really depends on your region and the time. I'm from Vancouver, BC and in the early days we saw lots of Rocky Mountains, Konas, Norcos, Nishiki's, Kuwahara/Apollos, and BRC's in the early days. When it came to US brands there were lots of GT's, Specialized, Ritchey, Marin, and I guess Trek. I remember seeing lots of Brodies around - but that's probably because I wanted one so badly. Nishiki and Kuwahara eventually disappeared and Diamondback and KHS came into the market.

Seeing a Yeti or a Fat Chance or a Salsa was super rare in those days.
