I think this really depends on your region and the time. I'm from Vancouver, BC and in the early days we saw lots of Rocky Mountains, Konas, Norcos, Nishiki's, Kuwahara/Apollos, and BRC's in the early days. When it came to US brands there were lots of GT's, Specialized, Ritchey, Marin, and I guess Trek. I remember seeing lots of Brodies around - but that's probably because I wanted one so badly. Nishiki and Kuwahara eventually disappeared and Diamondback and KHS came into the market.
Seeing a Yeti or a Fat Chance or a Salsa was super rare in those days.
