Been thinking about this after reading on another thread that a £1000 modern bike would be as good as a £5000 retro and after seeing a modern Cannondale that costs over £7000 :shock:

What was the most expensive retro bike pre around 1993? I choose this date as suspension, carbon, etc were only just popping up at this time so the main bulk of the bike cost was the frame and the groupset.

I'm talking about bikes you could get from a shop, not the hand built bespoke exotica. My guess would be something like the first full suss Manitou or titanium hardtail from the likes of Fat?

Can't remember anything over about £2500 myself so what do you lot think?

Manitou = £3k in 1992

Of course you're modern day £1000 bieks would be just as good. But you have to desine good.

Suspension and the components will all just work now and last. Brakes will generally out perform as will shifting.

But if you went rigid to rigid the only real fair frame test as you ignore suspension then you get down to the fact the cheap materials still make a cheap frame.

It's still cost plenty to make a The high end of Reynolds 853/Prestige Ultimate/Ritchey Logic Prestige etc... frames or for the $$ Ti frames compared to the bottom end off them.

Don't forget to times retro £ prices of circa 92/93 by ~1.5 to get what the price is in todays money to compare to what that would buy now.

Yeah, was thinking Manitou as well. Just dug out the 1993 Summer Special MBUK. Super bike test in that has the Fat Ti hardtail coming in at £2900 (frame £2000) and Yeti Arc at £2800.

So £3000 looks about top money then? :?

Nope there where more expensive

Rocky Mountain Ti-Bolt '93 XTR/XT mix with front sus was $4000 RRP (so similar price in £ as it was back then)

I believe the above prices in the articae are for the Frame and forks ?

WT Racer is $3200 '93 full XTR
WT FS is $4200 full XTR
