Most expensive early 90's mtb?

They were more expensive than about any Klein ...and still are.

A YETI ARC AS with Ringle everything, Grafton, XTR and Tioga disc wheel could have been in about the same league, from cost perspective.

The question is why, it just looks like a bog standard bike with bog standard parts on it ?
Quility finish to the frame no doubt,..

But 1994 WTB Pheonix frame and forks SRP = $1395 so not that much in the scheme of things
SE version is $40 more.
and Forks are $350 of that :s

But to compare to what the average UK bloke would look at
Kona Explosif 1993 (front sus version) $1399

Something Kona did well, scrimped on everything and banged out a reasonable bike for next to nothing

Yeah i remember that one , wasn't it a fillet brazed frame in black with loads of gold bits on it i think they had one in Harrods

Not really standard I would say.

Overhere you paid 13K for the full package. A very tricked out Klein Adroit would not ran over 10K normally. Still a waste of money of course, if you had already saved 10/13 of a Phoenix.

The black bike originally came with fenders and Bruce Gordon racks, hence the custom ordered eyelets

Ti Phoenix would cost even more

Since all the WTB technology was incorporated in Suntour XC Pro groupset by 1993 then

A similar spec Klein Adroit XC Pro (1993) is $3300
so that makes the Phoenix ~$4400 by your numbers. (same as Marin Ti FRS 1993) not too far under the $500 you gave.
So components/wheels on the frame = $3000 ? as I gave the SRP for 1994 for Frame&Fork at $1400 from magazine.

(not putting the bike down at all, I know which of the two I would buy given the money. I'm just trying to get the actual price... p.s. it's not made of alu coke cans)


Any idea of the Ti price ?

Probably too late but the Ibis Bow Ti was the most expensive production bike at the time it came out.

XC Pro groupset borrowed tech from WTB, while they are of course not the same as the originals

Officially the WTB Phoenix was not available as full bike overhere, however when you ordered one the shop that carried them back in the pretty much always specced the full WTB kit on it. Hence for a very substantial part a set package, nearing a full bike.

Two pricey catalogue full bikes on the Dutch market: Bart Brentjes spec American Eagle and the Koga RidgeRunner-Suspension. You could also get several of the offerings mentioned earlier in this topic.

And a Boulder Intrepid Ti or Specialized Ultimate with all the boutique goodies will also go beyond about everything in value.
