Hi folks,

I have a Kona nearing completeion which I believe to be a Kilauea from either 1994 or 1995. :D

Im currently running a 28.6mm seatpost in the frame which in all honesty is a little tight? Whats the next most common size down?

Another one for you experts - any idea how far down from the top of the ST it begins to taper? I haven't got any calipers and trying to do it by eye is impossible!

The reason for this strange Q is that could my 28.6mm x 400 post be catching where the ST tapers? :? It is run quite high (read I'm 6'2'' riding an 18'' frame! ;) )

Any help would be much appreciated.

M

:D :D :D

Thats the right size. the only other Kona size from that period would be 27.0 & if its tight i don't think that would help much.

I'm assuming you mean 26.8 rather than 28.6. I run a 26.8 in mine but according to Kona they are supposed to be 27.0 and Anthony runs 27.2s in his. If a 26.8 doesn't fit I am very surprised...

Doh!

Yes I mean 26.8!

Tis really quite tight - and the post is definatley stamped 26.8? :?

Strange.......

I imagine your Kilauea must be older than 94 - according to Sheldon Brown the Cinder Cone and Lava Dome used a 26.6 post up to 95 and I'm not aware that 26.8 was ever a Kona size. And the 93 Cinder Cone frame was the 92 Kilauea (the first one, that wasn't in the catalogue) - could your Kilauea be a 92?

It's an interesting point about the inside of the tube, but I think it will be straight internally - most mtb seat tubes are butted externally, and even if they were butted interrnally that would make the tube wider internally after the first 80mm or so.

My advice would be to get a larger frame, an 18" frame is too small for a person 6'2".

Thank you for that Andrew

The size is actually fine - my othe Kona is a 19''

I have this one with a long stem and my 19'' with a short stem ;)

Different horses for different courses.

Anyhoo....

got some vernier calipers being dropped off so I'll double check the internal diameter and go from there

Doesn't the 1992 Kilauea have a integrated seat post bolt?

i have a 93 lava dome and the seat is a 26.6 and upto i think 95 both the cinder cone and lavadome were 26.6. my kilauea is a 94 and i have a 27.2 post in there. The seat tube is the same all the way down so may be there is something stuck in there or you are hitting the bottle bosses, or you have the wrong size post, in which case once you get past the initial give in the seat clamp area because of the split in the tube for tightening, you will find that you are getting stuck. 26.6 posts are hard to get, selcof do a cheap version but i went with an x lite and shims, this also allows you to get the right size post as shims are quite cheap. On ebay at the moment there is a guy (mark antony cycles) selling new x lite posts at half price they are black though, i got one for my 94 kilauea and it looks great.
