Montana Sioux 1992?

Retro Newbie
Inherited a bike from my dad. In 1992isj he did some work for a local bike shop. They had no money to Pay him, so they gave him this bike. I got the impression it was quite something back then. Everything is Shimano XTR. The fork is not original, but otherwise its more or less intact. Is this something for collectors or should i just use it as a daily commuter bike? The decals are pretty beat up, and it is by no means mint. But it runs alot smoother than any other bike i have, decpite its age!

Have not been able to find anything about Montana Sioux online.

hi,
just wondering, where has your father bought the bike locally?

In Germany there was for a while a brand called Montana from a bike shop in Bavaria.
Below an ad for a Titanal model from 1993

I found also once a Montube Bike frame, labled Montana

Looking at the colors at the head badge, an Italian brand. There are some more rather cheap bikes available at Classified with same head badge.

Other than that, it's indeed hard to find anything else (and to not get confused by KHS, Scott, Schauff or Peugeot MTB models called Montana).

Hi! Thanks for your reply! The bike was bought in Norway. There is no other brand than Montana anywhere on it. But might make sense that it is European!

Rarity doesn't always mean collectible, that's no reflection of its quality, it's just that for something to be collectible it needs to be known about. Maybe if you can find out exactly where it was made there might be a local following for the brand.

If you can post the frame number and some close up shots of frame details, such as bottom bracket, welds and canti bridge - that might give some clues. It might be a custom build, or a model that was rebranded.

The presence of XTR and Ritchey dropouts suggests the frame was made with a quality tube set, it's a lovely looking bike and if it rides nice then you should ride it.

the Italian brand Montana seem to be still alive, founded in 1968
https://www.montanabike.com/Not sure if this is still the same as the one producing the rather cheap and rubbish bikes with Montana decals and Italian Flag head badge.
Just like this one
https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anze...ana-evolution-26zoll-full/2752775405-217-6117Quite obviously those bikes had been rather designed for appearance, less for substance and riding performance.

I don't think those have something in common with your bike and not just because yours is equipped with XTR group, but also the frame looks quite good.

Hopefully someone else will be able to shed some more light on this.
