Modolo brakes.

I had a set of Modolo Equipe, decent brakes but they were prone to squeaking. I swapped em for a pair of Mavic SSC which were plush by comparison.

There are some rare variations, like the La Vie Claire specific brakes which go for daft money to collectors, but the blokes selling NOS Modolo and hoping to get C Record prices are kinda kidding themselves ...

Quite possibly the worst (and the lightest) brakes I've ever used, Clb professionnel. Every nut and bolt is aluminium, which is nice, gets the weight down to 160gr the pair. However... Those brake blocks are tiny! About 40% less contact than regular on the rim, and in the rain as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

And did they squeal? They're french, of course they did!

That bike should be in an art gallery, it's so beautiful. 😍
I’m happy to report this lovely tribute machine is now with its true owner 👍

I had some CLB brake calipers. Not the pro level ones, they were a bit more mediocre. The arm snapped midway down as I was descending down the garden path. Fortunately I was only doing about 5mph but dred to think what could have been.
Took em back to swap for some weinmann 500s/730s

I had a set of early CLB Professionals, back in the days before alan bolt fittings and before they went overboard with alloy bolts. They were still light but had bigger brake blocks and were solid in use. Years later I was disappointed to discover how poor later versions were.

Some of the later Modolo brakes seem to be listed with pretty high prices too. Again it feels like that pricing is rather aspirational!

Modolo continued it's relationship with Mavic into the late 80/early 90s with the 440 SSC calipers, and their matching levers.

They came with the same plastic pad holders as most Modolo versions of this brake, and Mavic labelled sintered pads. For my Vitus 992 build I replaced the old pads with modern Kool Stop reproductions so I don't eat my rims away!

The 440 calipers use the same basic casting as a huge number of Modolo's own branded brakes along with the Sachs New Success and Rival calipers - velobase link - to name but a few.

I have these X-Eras which have a similar quality feel to the Mavic calipers, albeit with a different finish. I also have a pair of QT-EXE which are again the same casting, with cheaper seeming pads, a different cable attachment and round stock spring rather than the flat spring used in these.

Modolo was prolific at rebranding these brakes, all the ones I've spotted in this family style are as follows (although there may be more)! Velobase has photos of most of them; link

Modolo branded;
MACH 1
MACH 2
MACH 3
Q-EVEN
QT-EXE/GT-EXE? (Not sure of the letter!)
X-TENOS
X-ERAS
X-SETRA
ALX 90
EQUIPE KX 90
MASTER SLK 90
SUPER TI SLK 90

Sachs branded;
SACHS NEW SUCCESS
SACHS RIVAL
SACHS RIVAL R70
SACHS 3000 (I think this exists but I've never seen a picture)
SACHS 5000
SACHS 6000

Badged for other marque;
QUATTRO (Modolo logo but a branded Mach for the Bianchi Quattro frame?)
MAVIC 440 SSC
Edco Competition

Hope that's a useful list for you completist researchers out there!

I don't know if there is any metallurgical difference but in general the better quality offerings seem to have flat return springs, the sleeker plastic cartridge pad carriers and the allen cable anchor bolt. They also have little bungs that fit in the allen bolt heads and a little rubber piece that clips over the screw on the back of the arm below the QR adjuster.

The Kool Stop pads are great and worth investing in for a rider; https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brake-blocks/kool-stop-modolo-inserts-black-2-pairs/
