Hi, I've got a Peugeot Perthus Pro 753 and both the rear chainstays rusted through from the inside, about 4cm from the bottom bracket. Someone had tried to repair them and cover it all up with a repaint. First time I stood up the the pedals on a hill the rear wheel did a fairly major piece of realignment. Worse than yours believe me!
I have temporarily and successfully mig welded some steel patches over the crack..looks horrible but works fine! However perhaps you might want to look carefully at the chainstays on the underneath ...I'm told that chromed stays tend to rust from the inside because the acid from the chrome plating is not always removed from the inside of the tubing.
