I checked and it has no markings - blackened steel. My guess is it's the Shimano TL-UN96.

There are two similar but not quite identical tools, one for XTR, the other I think for ISIS bottom brackets.
The genuine XTR tool has longer dogs on it, possibly also a slightly smaller diameter. It would appear that they are broadly interchangeable...but not quite. It's a bit like freewheel removers.

That is interesting. Have to say mine looks like the un91 tool as prongs are longer. Perhaps a dedicated spider lock ring tool or the universal bbt18 is the way to go.

Bought an ice tools lock ring er, tool and it fitted a treat. Some physical effort was required but got the lock ring off.
It was indeed fitted the wrong way round, wtf? Anyway, at least it is off now,
Next challenge, getting the chain ring bolts off as they are recessed and none of my tools fit. I think some tool filing is in order.
