'Airfoil Raveblades', they cut through the cold air and lighten the bike, first used on a Marin Pseudohydrofoil Trail in 1988.

James Dyson and John Whyte had the idea following a acid house party in Liverpool, after a short journey over the river on a hydrofoil ferry, and having to ride home from the port on their Raleigh Burners, which felt like very heavy bikes. The design was scribbled on the back of a Phuture flyer but neither could remember drawing it. Being whacked out of their gourds on Purple Ohms didn't help with memory but the design was good, they called it the BTTF Doc Brown inspiration.

Although short lived as the effect was dependent on riding altitude and air density, some MTB retro bike riders still use them to this day. The lightening lift was small and negated by the weight of the designers' BMX handle bar grips. Die hard fans use the same grips today as a nod to Dyson and Whyte, they bear the rubbed skin blisters on their thumb knuckles to remind them of the struggle.

^ I used them as sails in the strong winds and they help gain traction in the crap,
its the longdendale trail junction with the pennine way and part of the trans-pennine trail at the very most northern tip of the peak district,
ive been riding up here since the late 80's it can be a bit bleak but its stunning in summer lots of single track and drovers roads.

Go(did) up there semi-regular, when the kids are in school and you're earlier than the dog walkers then the bottom reser (up-hill ZigZag& moody little down hill) makes a good lap against the clock, from memory i think it's 2.5 mile dead, the record stood at 9mins but a big section of it was done no handed intentionally leaving a time that could be beaten...trouble is we found a better run and have not been back since.

ride

nice to see you had the guts to go out! it's been not much above 5-6 degrees c. maybe colder there.

the TREk looks like it may have a raspberry slush puppy in the cage!
