Merlin Newsboy 19" - US Ebay - California

I don't like it. It looks weird and oddly proportioned.
And it has a Surly fork - Fine on my Kona cruiser, but a bit below par for a Merlin.

I wouldn't mind a Merlin Roots, as I prefer the "3-bar" style cruiser frames.
Each to their own. I'm sure it will attract a lot of bids.

Ditto. And that's why the dreamily spec'ed (on paper) Newsboy in BOTM Dec '09 got nowhere in the vote:

Interesting perspective. Are there any large bikes (suitable for someone of, say, 6'3"+ tall) that you think DO look well-proportioned?

That December BOTM Newsboy was mine... and I'd like to think my vote was much more impacted by the appearance of Piggy's staggering Mantis than the idea that people won't vote for a bike that's not in their size (or a size that looks "normal" to them).

If I applied that criteria, I'd have to dismiss 99% of BOTM entries as looking "poorly proportioned" for being only so small, right?

:)

Sorry - I hope that didn't come across as criticism of your personal bike (though Corduroy Boy mentioned it, not me).

Mine was a general comment that I prefer the 3-bar cruiser style to the cantilevered, curvy shape. And maybe the 3-bar style DOES look better when you get to larger sizes. Though the proportions of your Newsboy look a bit different to the EBay ad - So maybe there's a "camera/ distortion" thing going on that doesn't help the seller's cause?

Large bikes looking good? Probably not, TBH - You should see my gangly 29er - It's a real freak show. But it fits and it's comfortable, so.....

Does anybody have one of these in a small going spare? Has to be the single nicest bike frame available - only problem is the only ones that ever come up for sale are designed for freakishly long-legged types

So the bottom line really comes down to;

At 6'3" I am doomed to a life of fugly bikes.....
Ouch....

I like the Newsboy. Looks a little rough to be more than a very unique, top shelf vintage rider. I wonder if the people shopping for bikes of this caliber are seeking one in better condition? I give credit to the seller who used it for what it was made for Mountainbiking (not that there is anything wrong with a Garage Queen either) .....

Out of the question for me though,
Too small.....

Nice bike, no question, but is such a high price justifiable?

Of course that the emotional and collector factor is quite high.

Will it go over 3000 $ ?
