Merckx Corsa Extra in SLX with rather special provenance!

Re:

Thanks mate.

I´m awaiting a hammering for using modern components on such a special frame, but I just can't get into the whole vintage parts thing. If it works and it´s cheap I´ll use it. Plus, what´s the point of a parts bin if you don´t raid it?

Belated update.

Pantographed stem finally found and purchased in the correct length. :D

JagWire shift/brake cable set purchased.

Chain is on.

STI shifters have arrived.

The handlebar I have already on hand.

Once the Merckx stem arrives, I´ll build the buggar up.

hi. like it. love the stem. colours matched stem/ rims/post smart.
i wondered.did cinelli do blk curved bars ?
i would love slx quality.

Re:

I can definitely understand the argument for vintage componentry, but for me, classic road bikes are all about the steel springy ride. Modern components in the form of STI shifters, dual-pivot brakes and wider rubber and rims just add to the experience.

Kind of the best of all worlds, really. But each to their own. The bottom line is that this frame, which was bought by its previous owner purely for its groupset, stripped and stored for a number of years, is now back and will be ridden very hard indeed by me, there are no garage queens in my collection.

I am not aware of any modern 26.4 road bars, ebay is going to have to come up trumps (again). It only took 5 months to find the stem, hopefully some bars will turn up at a reasonable price somewhat sooner. It was bloody annoying to get all set up for the final bit of the build, parts on hand, beer opened etc etc only to find that the bar diameter was wrong.

Re:

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the bike build, but I think the carpet looks a lot better now !

There were anatomical Cinelli bars made, don't think they made curved ones though. Eubios they were called

Thanks Rusty. Yours is a fantastic bike.

Mike, there's nothing of merit about the build, but it has a useful spread of gearing and the Sora 9-speed shifters have an action that I particularly like. The future may see an 11-speed 105 groupset but there's no rush, I'll thrash what's on there first.

The frame has ample clearance for my preferred 622-28 tyres, which was a really pleasant surprise. A steel frame and 28 tyres makes for a super ride.
