The build quality was second to none and they placed a huge emphasis on it`s rebuildability which didnt fire the public`s imagination like XTR did.It was totally out classed by XTR performance and price wise and it was waaay heavy. It also had no brakeset.I love it :D .

Thanks! Very helpful. I remember the cranks and rings being heavy.

Re:

Just to echo what's been said, it's really nice stuff. I'm a serious Campag fan but have to admit the build quality of Mavic kit is probably better. They were the only company truly committed to rebuildability too, but as mentioned this was of little interest to the market then, as now. *sigh*

Re:

There are quite a few hubs and headsets around that can be got for ok money. The black Paris Dakkar hubs are brilliant. The only reason I sold mine was because in the 90s an 8 speed HG freewheel wasnt available,if there was I`d probably be still be using them.Has anyone seen the cranks come up for sale?I`d shudder to think what a nos set would bring.....

If you search "http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=266947&start=10" you should find some pictures of my bike. The hardest thing to source was the seatpost, almost 5 years of searching and I located an NOS 330 (road post) which I couldn't ignore. I had to adapt it for a mountain length by inserting a billet section into the bottom and industrial gluing it in place, been fine for two years with no obvious problems :)

Cheers...Rich

Re:

As the poster above has identified, the only seat posts that, (rarely), come up for sale seem to be road, Ref 330 posts. I've never seen a 337 MTB post in any diameter for sale. The 337's were 350mm long. I'm not sure of the 330 lengths, but 250mm max I suspect.

Can you get them now?
Nowadays 8 speed HG freewheels are commonplace and cheap as they are specced to low end bikes. In the 90s HG freewheels were also fitted to low end bikes but 5 or 6 speed was yer lot.

I use Mavic rear and front derailleurs and rings with Sachs freewheel and Simplex shifter. It works perfect.

And a friend of me use a Mavic derailleur with XT thumbies, it works also perfect.

Cheers,
